Dr. Gullapalli Nageswara Rao, Founder and Chair - L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) has been elected as President to the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI). The Academia is a 73 member body of the most eminent academicians in ophthalmology in the world, each holding a chair of this prestigious body. The 73 chairs represent professors from many top most universities of the world and Dr Rao is the first ever non-university based academician and the first one from outside US, Europe and Japan to be elected President of this body. It was double delight for India as Pentela Harikrishna and Dronavalli Harika won silver medals in the Asian Continental Blitz Chess Championship that concluded in Sharjah.  This performance will no doubt boost the confidence of both Indian Grandmasters ahead of the World Rapid and Blitz tournaments.  While Harika will be the only Indian in the Women's World Blitz meet, starting in Khanty Mansiysk on Wednesday, Hari will play the World Rapid and Blitz event to be held in Dubai from June 15-21.

High school senior Neha Valluri , 18, is set for the biggest challenge of her life when she reports for training at the United States Military Academy at West Point at 6:30 a.m. on July 2 . The petite Indian American girl was selected out of a field of more than 11,000 applicants, which had been winnowed down to a short list of 500 high schoolers who were then invited to spend a week at the school for a taste of what life will be like as a cadet at one of America’s top military academies. “I’m so excited,” she told in a recent phone interview from her home in Portland, Ore. You'll probably never visit it, but a trench under nearly two miles of ice in Antarctica has been named after a Kansas University professor and head of a center devoted to studying the consequences of climate change. The U.S. Board of Geographic Names recently named the " Gogineni Subglacial Trench " after Prasad Gogineni , a Kansas University distinguished professor of electrical engineering and computer science. Gogineni directs the KU-based Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets, or CReSIS, an international organization funded by the National Science Foundation and tasked with predicting the effects of melting glaciers on the planet's sea levels. Much of the center's work involves developing radar technology to study glacial features and computer models to anticipate melting patterns.
