University of Vermont names Suresh Garimella as next president

The University of Vermont’s Board of Trustees has appointed Suresh Garimella as the university’s 27th president. Garimella, currently executive vice president for Research and Partnerships and the Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, will begin his new role effective July 1. As Purdue’s executive vice president, Garimella oversees Discovery Park, “a unique set of facilities and institutes, where disciplines converge to solve global challenges related to health and life sciences, sustainability, food, energy and defense and security,” according to a university press release. He is responsible for Purdue’s international programs and its global and corporate partnership endeavors, focused on strengthening relationships to advance innovation, research, and education. Hong Kong firm buys Oakridge International School for Rs.1400 crores

Hong Kong-based school chain Nord Anglia Education Inc. has entered India by acquiring People Combine Education India Initiatives Ltd's (Promoted by Tummala Naga Prasad and Yarlagadda Venkata Rajasekhar Babu ) schools under the Oakridge International brand. Nord Anglia, owned by Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and Baring Private Equity Asia, has acquired five Oakbridge K-12 schools for kindergarten to grade 12 students. The five schools are located in Hyderabad, Vishakhapatnam, Bengaluru and Mohali, and have a total of 7,000 students, People Combine said in a statement. The deal will allow Oakbridge International schools to expand their offering, People Combine group chairman Tummala Naga Prasad said. The companies did not disclose financial details but a person familiar with the transaction said that the deal size is likely to be around $200 million (Rs 1,400 crore). Padma Bhushan Moturi Satyanarayana (Freedom fighter - MP)

Moturi Satyanarayana (2 February 1902 – 6 March 1995) was an Indian freedom fighter alongside Mohandas Gandhi until 1947 and then a member of the Constituent Assembly of India which drafted the Indian Constitution. He was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha (the Upper House in the Indian government) until 1966. He was instrumental in making Hindi an official language in the Indian Constitution, while tolerating the other major Indian languages. He devoted his later life to helping spread Hindi in South India. Moturi was born in Dondapadu village in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, India. After his primary education, he studied English, Telugu, and Hindi at the National College in Machilipatnam, achieving a high proficiency in them. He joined the Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha as a volunteer and gradually became the Secretary and Principal Secretary of that organisation. Podile Appa Rao is new Vice Chancellor of University of Hyderabad

Appa Rao Podile has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) for a period of five years. The Professor is a senior faculty member in the Department of Plant Sciences at UoH and is known for his contributions in the area of plant-microbe interactions in general and plant disease control, using modern molecular approaches in particular. Native of Guntur  AppaRao obtained his MSc, and then completed his Ph.D. in 1987 from the Sardar Patel University in Gujarat. He was a postdoctoral fellow (1998) of the Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan and subsequently was a visiting scientist (2000), at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica. Dr Gurram Ramprakash from Vijayawada city secured All-India first rank in Surgical Gastroenterology in JIPMER Super Specialty Entrance Test. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation earlier this month announced the 2018 Coke Scholars class, with several Indian American students among the recipients. In total, the foundation named 150 students as 2018 Scholars, with each receiving a $20,000 college scholarship. Among the recipients include Sohan Kancherla (St.Louis – MO), Meghana Nadella (Allen - Texas), and Lakshmi Vallabhaneni (Chandler – AZ) The entire class of Scholars will attend the 2018 Scholars Weekend April 19-22, 2018, for a time of inspiration, fun, and camaraderie. The Andhra Pradesh government has appointed Pinnamaneni Uday Bhaskar as Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission. The post has been lying vacant for quite some time now. Dr. Uday Bhaskar, professor of Civil Engineering and Director of Foreign Universities and Alumni Relations of the JNTU Kakinada, is also director of evaluation at the JNTU-K.  A B.Tech graduate from the JNTU College of Engineering, Dr. Uday Bhaskar did his masters and doctoral degrees in environmental engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Apurva Kanneganti scores perfect on SAT and ACT creates record

GERMANTOWN, TN -  Apurva Kanneganti , A Shelby County Schools student has accomplished two nearly-impossible feats, achieving perfect scores on both the ACT and SAT. Germantown High School Senior Apurva Kanneganti scored a 36 on the ACT and a 2400 on the SAT.  the scores which are rarely achieved. Born in Hyderabad, Apurva moved to US when she was just two-years. Tamilnadu: In 1966, GR Govindarajulu took the initiative to start the first private medical college in Tamil Nadu along with the Lakshmi Group. Land was purchased and a medical college building was constructed in 1966. The medical college was managed by both the PSG and Lakshmi Groups till 1969, when it was taken over by the Government of Tamil Nadu and renamed as Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Bangalore: Yalamanchili Shiva Santosh Kumar , (23), bagged 23 medals including 14 golds at the 23rd Annual Convo-cation of the National Law School of India University at Nagarbhavi on Sunday. The Chief Justice of India, HL Dattu - the NLSIU chancellor, presided over the event. Other dignitaries included DV Sadananda Gowda, union minister of law and justice, and judges from the SC. BITS Pilani appoints Vajja Sambasiva Rao as acting vice chancellor

PILANI: BITS Pilani has announced the joining of Vajja Sambasiva Rao as the acting vice chancellor of the Pilani campus on Saturday . He took charge from Bijendra Nath Jain, who completed his five-years tenure as the vice chancellor of the institute. A farewell function was organized for Jain as tribute for his contribution towards BITS Pilani.  After accepting the role of vice chancellor in 2010, Jain had made prolific and sustained contributions to teaching and research at the institute. Praneet Polineni named US Presidential Scholars for 2015

Praneet Polineni , a senior at Stanton College Preparatory School, has been named one of the 11 Indian Americans among 141 Presidential Scholars in the United States. T he prestigious award is based on academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship and contributions to school and community. The scholars, who will be recognized at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., are chosen by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, which is appointed by the president, a news release said. They also got to recognize a teacher who has greatly influenced them. Praneet chose Erika Migues, a math teacher at Stanton. Presidential Scholars are brought to Washington, D.C. the summer after they graduate from high school. During the National Recognition Program, they meet with government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists, businessmen, among others. They are also felicitated with a Presidential Medallion in a ceremony sponsored by the White House.
