Humpy finishes joint first at Kazan Grand Prix chess

World No.4 Koneru Humpy   p ulled off a great win with an unusual opening move with black and rounded off a very successful tournament with a share of the first place at the FIDE Women Grand Prix Chess. She was tied at 7.5 points with the higher rated  Anna  Muzychuk of Slovakia. The Grand Prix Chess 2011-12 is a series of six tournaments and the Kazan event was the fourth. World champion Hou Yifan won the first two and then another Chinese player, Zhao Xue won the third. After the fourth Grand Prix in Kazan, the last two are in Jermuk, Armenia and Istanbul, Turkey. Humpy was sixth in the first event in Rostov, Russia and did not play in Shenzhen, China and Nalchik, Russia. Humpy, who had a share of the lead with two others after the penultimate round, beat Alisa Galliamova in the final round, while co-leader  Anna Muzychuk beat Nadezhda Kosintseva. Bharat Biotech receives $ 4 million award from The Wellcome Trust

HYDERABAD: Vaccine manufacturer Bharat Biotech (Dr. Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing  Director) and The University of Maryland Center for Vaccine Development (CVD) have received $ 4 million from The Wellcome Trust for clinical development of a new conjugate vaccine for treating an infectious disease. The Trust will also fund clinical trials beginning in three years to prevent the potentially lethal infectious disease caused by invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS). This strain is most common in the sub Saharan African regions among malnourished children. About 20-30% of the children are known to die because of this infectious disease each year. "The impact, importance of academic and industry partnership is far reaching," Dr. Krishna Ella, chairman and managing director, Bharat Biotech said. Nina Davuluri, Second runner up Miss New York 2012

Miss New York 2012 on Saturday night held in the St. George Theatre in Staten Island, N.Y., was co-hosted by Claire Buffie, Miss New York 2010, and Hunt Ethridge, a Mr. New York 2011 finalist. Miss Greater Rochester Nina Davuluri, emerged second runner up. Nina Davuluri, who emerged first runner-up in the `Miss America's Outstanding Teen' 2007 contest. She was Miss Michigan's Outstanding Teen 2006 winner. She is ther younger daughter of NRI couple Davuluri Chowdary and Sheila Ranjani from Vijayawada.

Ashrita Vadlapatla: Cumberland County's top speller and youngest speller competed in Scripps National Spelling Bee 2012

Fourth-grader Ashrita Vadlapatla is Cumberland County's top speller, advances to Scripps National Spelling Bee 2012. 8-year-old Ashrita Vadlapatla of Renaissance Classical Christian Academy outlasted 10-year-old Hahn Lheem of Stoney Point Elementary. The pair battled for 81 out of the bee's 93 rounds. The other 10 competitors - all of them the winners of district-level bees - dropped out by misspelling words in the first 12 rounds. She is the youngest spellers competed in the event, is a fourth-grader at Renaissance Classical Christian Academy in Fayetteville, North Carolina

Kamma Vidyardhi Sahaya Sangham Women's hostel inaugurated

The new women's hostel has been named after Muthavarapu Swarna Devi, who donated the highest amount. A hostel for degree girl students and working women built by the Kamma Vidyardhi Sahaya Sangham in Journalist Colony a stone's throw away from Siddhartha Arts and Science College was inaugurated by office-bearers of the association, on Thursday. Ajay Naidu: Indian American Actor

Ajay Kalahastri Naidu (born 12 February 1972 ) is an Indian American actor. His parents came to the United States from Chittor district, AP, India in 1964. Naidu was born in Evanston, Illinois . He attended Evanston Township High School . He trained with the American Repertory Theater 's Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard University . His first professional acting job was the film Touch and Go(released in 1986) which he won from an open call. He starred in the TV-movie, Lady Blue (1985) as "Paquito". This was followed by an ABC Afterschool Special episode, "No Greater Gift" (1985), where he played "Nick Santana", a 12-year old boy with a terminal illness. Pranay Chowdary Malempati winner of 2012 Delaware State Spelling Bee

Delaware’s contestant in the Scripps National Spelling Bee 2012 is 13-year-old Pranay Malempati , an eighth-grader at Waters Middle School in Middletown. Malempati won Delaware’s Spelling Bee in March, which drew 93 entrants from across the state. He also competed in the national Bee in 2010. Pranay placed first in the individual and team events at the regional Math League competition. In the state Science Olympiad he won third place for “Disease Detectives” and third place for “Microbe Mission.” Pranay has earned the Life Scout rank in Boy Scouts, and he plays Little League baseball. Pranay Chowdary Malempati, correctly spelled "pallor" and "mahout" at the Scripps National Spelling Bee 2012 in National Harbor, Md., but his performance on a written test reduced his chances to enter in to semifinals.

Saketh Myneni bags ITF title

Mandya (Karnataka), June 2 (IANS) Saketh Myneni, the 24-year-old from Hyderabad, won the title in the $10,000 Prem Sugars ITF Men's Future tennis tournament here Saturday defeating top seed Vijayant Malik 6-3, 6-4 in the final. The fourth seeded Myneni outplayed Malik in a lop-sided final that lasted just 54 minutes. Myneni blasted winners at will against an erratic Malik who struggled to find his rhythm. Though Malik came up with some strong returns, he however made quite a few unforced errors. In the first set, Myneni playing aggressively, raced to a 3-0 lead breaking Malik in the second game. He kept up the momentum and wrapped up the set at 6-3. The second set too followed the same pattern and Myneni slowing down the tempo forced Malik into lot of mishits. Myneni broke in the fifth game and then took a 4-2 lead before closing the set. Myneni with this win earned $1,300 in prize money and 18 points

Snigdha Nandipati wins US National Spelling Bee

Snigdha Nandipati heard a few words she didn’t know during the National Spelling Bee, but never when she stepped to the microphone. Calm and collected throughout, the 14-year-old Indian-American from San Diego spelled “guetapens,” a French-derived word that means ambush, snare or trap, to win the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night. She beat out eight other finalists in the nerve-wracking, brain-busting competition. After she spelled the word, she looked from side to side, as if unsure her accomplishment was real, and, oddly, she was not immediately announced as the winner. Applause built slowly, and a few pieces of confetti trickled out before showering her. Then her younger brother ran on stage and embraced her, and she beamed. “I knew it. Minister for Animal Husbandry, TKM Chinnaiah (Born 05/Feb/1962)  is a member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and held the post of Chairman of Tambaram Municipality in 2001. He is elected as the Member of Legislative Assembly from Tambaram Constituency in May 2011. He was sworn in as the minsiter for Sports and Youth Welfare, Environment and Pollution Control and Wakfs after winning the elections. Born and brought up in East Tambaram, T.K.M.Chinnaiah lives in a modest house on Bharatha Matha Street opposite Jaigopal Garodia National Higher Secondary School, Bishop Heber Hall. The family runs a flour mill. He contested once successfully for the post of Chairman of Tambaram Municipality in 2001. He got elected as councillor five years later.
