Delaware’s contestant in the Scripps National Spelling Bee 2012 is 13-year-old Pranay Malempati, an eighth-grader at Waters Middle School in Middletown.
Malempati won Delaware’s Spelling Bee in March, which drew 93 entrants from across the state. He also competed in the national Bee in 2010.
Pranay placed first in the individual and team events at the regional Math League competition.
In the state Science Olympiad he won third place for “Disease Detectives” and third place for “Microbe Mission.”
Pranay has earned the Life Scout rank in Boy Scouts, and he plays Little League baseball.
