Nina Davuluri is the new sensation of the world. The Indian-American descent Nina has been crowned as Miss America. Nina Davuluri is the first contestant from the Indian heritage and second consecutive contestant from New York to win the Miss America 2014 pageant.
The 24-year-old Nina Davuluri is the second consecutive Miss New York to win the Miss America pageant. She follows another Miss New York, Mallory Hagan who was crowned Miss America in 2013. Nina is a native of Syracuse in New York and wants to become a doctor. Nina Davuluri is basically from Vijayawada in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. She is indeed the first Indian NRI to contest for the Miss America pageant. Her maternal grandmother Vege Koteshwaramma, who runs the Montessori group of institutions was elated at her grand daughter's feat. Her mother Shiela Ranjani and her father Dhana Koteswara Chowdhary, both of whom are doctors, had migrated to the US in the early 80s and Nina was born and brought up in America.
Nina Davuluri wore a bright yellow coloured gown when she was crowned Miss America. The plunging neckline of the floor sweeping gown had a nude bodice underneath. It was plain and looked classy on her. She accessorised the look with golden earrings and handcuff.
She had left behind 53 contestants to grab this pageant title. She impressed the judges with her talent, beauty, confidence and interactive skills. The smart answer to the question and answer round might have made Nina lucky! She was asked "Julie Chen had plastic surgery to appear less Asian. What do you think of her decision?" Davuluri quickly stated that she did not approve of plastic surgery, but said, "I've always viewed Miss America as the girl next door and the girl next door is evolving."
Nina Davuluri even performed an Indian "classic Bollywood fusion" in one of the talent competitions. She looked pretty and bright in a red and blue outfit.
Nina Davuluri's first runner-up was Miss California, Crystal Lee. Other top five finalists were Miss Minnesota, Rebecca Yeh; Miss Florida, Myrrhanda Jones, and Miss Oklahoma, Kelsey Griswold. Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail had gathered a lot of attention in the Miss America pageant as she was the first Miss America contestant to display her body tattoos openly on the ramp. Vail even won "America's Choice" vote which landed her to the semi-finals. However, she couldn't beat the strong contenders.
Eighty-nine-year old Koteshwaramma Choudhary broke down as news reached her that her granddaughter, 24-year-old Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America 2014
“It was not surprising, knowing my granddaughter’s determination and talents,” said Koteshwaramma, who runs Montessori Mahila Kalasala in Vijaywada, 280 kilometres away from Hyderabad.
Speaking to this correspondent over phone, Koteshwaramma said, “I am immensely happy for my granddaughter as it is a great achievement. She finally reached her dream goal. But I know she will not rest and will go further ahead.”
