S African appoints Pamela Naidoo as Geology Society head

Johannesburg August 01, 2012: A veteran Indian-origin geologist has been appointed as the new president of the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA).

Pamela Naidoo, the country manager for exploration at international mining giant Rio Tinto, took over the reins of the GSSA, which was established in 1895, and is one of the oldest and largest societies of its kind in Africa.

Naidoo has been a member of the Society for more than a decade and served as its vice-president on the management committee for five years.

The Society promotes the study of the earth sciences, facilitates the professional development of its members, and advances the use of geoscience in the academic, professional, and public sectors.

Naidoo said she was drawn into the field of Geology through a lifelong fascination with science, in particular earth sciences.

She obtained degrees at various South African universities and was prompted to do a Master's degree after working on a magnetite deposit in north central Vietnam.

Naidoo has received numerous accolades for recognition for her activities in developing skills and promoting best practice in the industry.

She is highly active in promoting the role of women in mining and was involved in forming an association of mining professionals, Women in Mining South Africa in 2010.

Challapalli Fort - History of Yarlagadda Zamindars

Challapalli is a village in Krishna district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is located in Challapalli mandal of Machilipatnam revenue division. The Rajah of Challapalli, Srimanthu Raja Yaralagadda Ankineedu Prasad Bahadur Garu built this Palace in the early 18th centaury.
