L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) founder and chairman, Dr Gullapalli Nageswara Rao has won the 'G.O.H. Naumann Award'. The International Council of Ophthalmology, which is the global umbrella organisation for all national and regional Ophthalmological Societies of the world, selected Dr Rao for the award.
The award is named after the former president of the Council and internationally renowned German ophthalmologist, and is given away in recognition for ‘outstanding global leadership in eye care’. Dr Rao received this award at the annual meeting of the Council.
Dr Gullapalli N Rao founded the L V Prasad Eye Institute 25 years ago. The Institute provides high quality comprehensive eye care to all people; provides sight enhancement and rehabilitation services at the Institute and through its rural eye health network; offers professional ophthalmic training at all levels. It conducts advanced eye care research. It is also a World Health Organisation (WHO) Centre for the prevention of blindness and a global resource centre for Vision 2020, a worldwide initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness led by WHO and the international agency for the prevention of blindness.
