It was going to take more than a pogonip to keep Swetha Jasti from triumphing at the 2011 Olathe District Spelling Bee.
The seventh-grader began sobbing with joy on stage when told she had correctly spelled the Shoshone word that means an icy winter fog.
Swetha defeated 42 other top-notch spellers at the bee held Thursday at Frontier Trail Middle School, sponsored by The Olathe News. She will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., on June 1-2.
“Awesome,” was how the 13-year-old described her feelings after winning. She has been entering spelling bees since she was in the first grade and this was her fourth year at the district level. Two years ago, she came in third.
“I was nervous the whole time,” said Swetha, who attends Chisholm Trail Middle School. “I’m just really happy.”
