KEARNEY, October 5: The University of Nebraska at Kearney doubles team of Yeswanth Nadella and Josh Raymond won the USTA/ITA Central Regional Sunday and will advance to the National Small College Championships Oct. 14-17 in Mobile, Ala.
They are the second UNK players to win the regional. In 2007, William Jacome won the singles regional title and finished sixth at the national meet.
Nadella, from Andhra Pradesh, India, and Raymond, from Elkhorn defeated Western New Mexico’s Henning Thrien and Yair Banuelos, 8-1, in the finals of the three-day tournament played at Harmon Park.
Thrien and Banuelos were the top seeds in the bracket and each had advanced to the singles semifinals. Banuelos, the No. 1 seed, lost to Metro State’s Lucio Cangiano in the singles finals, 4-6, 7-5, 12-10.
Nadella and Raymond went 4-0 in the tournament.
