2008 Woomer Award Winner, Murali Mohan Gadde Murali M. Gadde is a senior engineer with Peabody Energy located in Saint Louis, MO. As the lead ground control specialist, Murali assists Peabody surface and underground operations with any type of ground control issue. Mr. Gadde has worked on a total of over 150 projects, which included several major research topics. Mr. Gadde has done extensive research on coal mine explosions and mine seal designs and made several original contributions. He has also made several important contributions to ground control research on topics like in-situ stresses, cutter roof failures, rock failure criteria, support design, weak floor stability and several others. So far, he has published 21 technical papers in international journals, conference proceedings and workshops, and was recently awarded SME’s 2008 Woomer Award given to young professionals for “significant contributions to the advancement of coal mining.”

MUMBAI: Leela Naidu, (Her father was the well known nuclear physicist Pattipati Ramaiah Naidu from Chittor District Andhra Pradesh while her mother was of Irish / French origin) was crowned Miss India in 1954, once listed by Vogue as one of the 10 most beautiful women in the world, passed away at her Colaba residence on Tuesday night. She was 69. A close family friend of the actress told that Naidu was down with fever for some days. "Last night, one of her domestic staff gave her porridge,'' he said. "She had a few spoons, after which she went to sleep. A little later, one of her paying guests who came to check on her found her dead.'' The funeral at Chandanwadi was attended by her daughter, grandson and friends. Film publicist Piroj Wadia, who knew Naidu for nearly nine years, said the actress had descended into loneliness after her second husband, the late litterateur Dom Moraes, left her. HYDERABAD: Justice Konamaneni Amareswari (71), the first woman judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, who has been practising as a Supreme Court advocate for last 13 years since retirement, died in New Delhi on Saturday afternoon. She is survived by a son and a daughter. The former judge was born on July 10, 1928 at Appikatla village, Bapatla mandal, Guntur district. She obtained her M.A. Degree in Politics and History from Andhra University in 1949 and took her B.L., Degree also from the same University. Was a member of Bar Council during 1960-61. Was the Vice-President of the Indian Federation of Women Layers, (Andhra Pradesh) Branch. Was the Vice-President of A.P. High Court Advocates’ Association during 1975-76. Appointed as permanent Judge on 29-4-1978 for A.P High court.

Solar Semiconductor , (Hari Surapaneni Chiarman and MD) a Hyderabad-based manufacturer of photovoltaic (PV) modules, is setting up a solar cell plant at its Fab City campus with an investment of about $100 million (about Rs 490 crore). According to the company’s vice-president Ravi Surapaneni , the plant will have a capacity of 30 Mw initially and will be ramped up to 60 Mw subsequently. The solar cells manufactured here will be utilised by the company’s PV module-making plant at the Fab City. At present, Solar Semiconductor has a photovoltaic module-making capacity of 200 Mw a year, including 130 Mw at the Fab City and 70 Mw at Kompally. Both the facilities are dedicated to the export markets in the US, Germany, Spain and Italy. Solar Semiconductor is expecting the PV modules business to grow at around 30 per cent annually. Mumbai: Asia’s largest private sector hospital, SevenHills Hospital, Mumbai, will start its first phase of operations in September. The Rs1,000 crore project is a public-private partnership between the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Hyderabad-based SevenHills Healthcare Pvt Ltd. As part of the agreement, 20% of the 1,500-bed capacity of the hospital will be reserved for patients who come through the BMC’s healthcare system, said Jitendra Das Maganti, chairman and managing director, SevenHills Healthcare. Under the public-partnership initiative, BMC has leased out for 60 years a 17-acre plot for the hospital at Andheri near the Mumbai international airport. With a built-up area of 2 million sq. ft, the hospital has 16 blocks divided into 11 levels. The funding for the project comprises mostly private capital and term loans from banks.
