Natco medicine gets 'Orphan Drug' status

Hyderabad March 29, 2011, Natco Pharma’s (V C Nannapaneni, Chairman & MD) a nti-cancer drug, NRC-AN-019, has received ‘Orphan Drug’ designation from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for three indications — glioma (brain tumour), pancreatic cancer and chronic myelogenous leukemia. “It is for the first time that an Indian company’s drug is designated as orphan drug by the USFDA for three indications, ” Natco said in a statement today. Orphan drug designation is given by the USFDA for rare diseases that affect less than 200,000 patients in the USA. Since the market for drugs intended to treat rare diseases is small, the USFDA extends special incentives to companies involved in the discovery and development of such drugs. The incentives, according to the Hyderabad-based company, include a seven-year marketing exclusivity, specific tax credits and waiver of prescription drug user fee, which is about $1.5 million per indication. Lanco turns biggest private power firm

Lanco Infratech, (Lagadapati Madhusudhana Rao, Chairman) with interests in power generation, construction, infrastructure and property development, said that it has emerged the largest independent power producer in India with an installed capacity of 3,292 mw. The company has achieved this through synchronising the 600 mw unit of Lanco Anpara Power, a special purpose vehicle implementing the power project of 1,200 mw in two tranches in Uttar Pradesh. Lanco Infratech now has 5,953 mw of power projects under various stages of construction and 4,470 mw of power projects under development. Anpara is a pithead project with coal-mines 25 km away with an existing system of transportation of coal in railway wagons. Sairam Atluri , MD (Tri-State Spine Care, Cincinnati). Dr. Atluri is the director of the Tri-State Spine Care Institute in Cincinnati and has served as vice president of the Ohio Chapter of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. Chaithra Katamneni: winner of 2010 NTPGA Tour Championship

Dallas, TEXAS: CMSN 8th grade student Chaithra Katamneni won the North Texas PGA (NTPGA) Tour Championship for 2010. This 2-day golf tournament was held at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney, Texas. Chaithra scored 76 and 73 to win by 6 strokes under her nearest competitor. After 7 months of competition in various tournaments during 2010, the top players from East, West and North Texas had to qualify and then be invited to play in this prestigious tournament. Chaithra is 13 years old and is the youngest winner to have won the 15-18 year old girls division in this championship’s history.
