Mandava Holdings to raise over Rs 800 crore

Hyderabad-based Mandava Holdings (Mandava Prabhakara Rao, Chairman) might use a part of the fresh fund raising to provide a part exit to global private equity major Blackstone, which has invested Rs 250 crore in Nuziveedu Seeds.

Mandava Holdings, the Rs 5,500-crore parent company of Nuziveedu Seeds - one of the top Bt-cotton producers in India - is understood to be gearing up to raise as much as Rs 800 crore. Hyderabad-based Mandava Holdings, which straddles businesses across power, textiles, sugar and infrastructure, besides cotton and seeds, might use a part of the fresh fund raising to provide a part exit to global private equity major Blackstone, which has invested Rs 250 crore in Nuziveedu Seeds. Mandava Holdings will also be using a part of the funds to settle its Rs 700-crore debt repayment, which will be due in March 2015.

According to sources, Mandava Holdings would raise the money through two tranches of Rs 450 crore and Rs 350 crore. Investment bankers added that in addition to the possibility of providing a part exit to Blackstone through this route, Mandava Holdings, which controls 85 per cent in Nuziveedu Seeds, has once again started the process for a public offer - another route for Blackstone to exit further. Mandava Holdings' management could not be reached for comments.

Mandava Holdings hitting the market to raise funds through the private placement route is likely to draw a host of private equity majors who were keenly looking at investing in the holding company structures. In the recent past, holding companies of various established companies such as Avantha Group, Apollo Hospitals, GMR Infrastructure, Leela Group, besides the earlier transaction with Coffee Day Group had evinced a keen interest from various private equity players. Global private equity major Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) has been among the extremely aggressive ones who have been on many such structured transactions.

Mandava Holdings is betting heavily on its flagship Nuziveedu Seeds, which is involved in production, processing and marketing of hybrid seeds of various crops and vegetables. Investment bankers further indicated the company had in 2011 planned a Rs 900-crore public offer, which was subsequently shelved.

Nuziveedu Seeds, which has revenues of about Rs 900 crore, is among the top-three players in the Indian cotton seeds market with 25-30 per cent market share. However, last year, the operating profit margin dropped to 18 per cent from 26 per cent owing to monsoon vagaries.

According to industry analysts, a healthy portion of its Mandava Holdings net worth of Rs 7,300 crore comes from a good chunks of properties that the group owns, which is being jointly developed with reputed developers.

Jasti earns GOP nod for Wayne State Board of Governors

NNO Jasti runs for WSU.jpg
Satish Jasti is one of two candidates representing the Republican Party for the office of Wayne State University Board of Governors on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

“I am proud to be on the November ballot,” said Jasti, who earned the selection when hundreds of delegates voted for him at the Republican State Convention last month in Novi. “I want to thank all the delegates who trust me to bring balance and financial integrity to Wayne State University.”

With aggregate student debt at more than $1 trillion nationwide, Jasti is focused on addressing this crushing load that is holding back students for attaining higher education.

Jasti believes in the value of cutting costs in certain areas of Wayne State’s budget and reallocating that money to more effectively benefit the student population.

He said he plans to be a strong advocate for Wayne State in Lansing to ensure that students receive the proper levels of state funding to help control rising tuition costs.

Jasti also supports a strong focus to increase graduation rates, which will help attract more talented professors and research scientists to the institution. Jasti believes that the current Democrat-controlled Board has not done enough to address declining student graduation.

Jasti, a Wayne State graduate, and a University of Chicago MBA, has extensive experience in the financial industry, including his experience of working for the Federal Reserve. As a local entrepreneur, he founded a business-oriented community bank (Lotus) in Novi in 2007 by raising $14 million from investors. Under his guidance and leadership from 2008 to 2009, his bank lent more than $55 million to small businesses, which helped to create and to retain hundreds of jobs in local communities during the great financial crisis.

If elected, Jasti says he will bring balance and a “business focus” to Wayne State’s Board of Governors. Jasti’s feels his financial experience will help to analyze major university investments, as well as achieve cost reductions by streamlining processes, restructuring organizations and raising revenues – without compromising education quality.

Jasti holds an accounting degree from Wayne State University and an MBA from University of Chicago. He currently resides in West Bloomfield with his wife, Sree Jasti. They have two daughters, ages 24 and 17.

Tummala Nageswara Rao is set to join in TRS offered ministerial berth in the Cabinet

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Telangana, senior leader and former minister Tummala Nageswar Rao on Saturday resigned from the party amid speculation that he might join the ruling TRS along with a few senior Kamma leaders Muvva Vijaya Babu, Chairman DCCB - Khammam and others.

"I have resigned from TDP. I cannot tell reasons now. I am not well. I cannot speak much," he said.

Tummala, however, confirmed he was in touch with TRS leaders. "They (TRS) leaders are talking to me. I have not initiated the talks," he said when asked about his political future.

A close aide of Tummala, who hails from Khammam district, said the resignation letter was sent to TDP office by fax.

Accordting to sources, Tummala has been offered ministerial berth in K. Chandrasekhar Rao's Cabinet, as TRS looks to gain further ground in the district, where it has only one MLA - Jalagam Venkata Rao - son of late chief minister Jalagam Vengala Rao.

Though Tummala did not publicly cite any reason for leaving the TDP, his growing differences with a senior party leader in the district is said to be the cause for his exit.

In the last Assembly election, Tummala lost Khammam seat to Congress candidate Puvvada Ajay Kumar by a margin of little over 6,000 votes.

He served as a minister in the N. Chandrababu Naidu Cabinet in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh gets new capital in Vijayawada region

Prakasam Barrage

The city of Vijayawada was on Thursdsy named the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu told the assembly that the government has decided to "locate the capital at central place of the state around Vijayawada".

Naidu said the decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting September 1.

"Andhra Pradesh capital to be centrally located around Vijayawada. Will do justice to every city through decentralised development," Naidu tweeted.

The naming of a new capital for Andhra Pradesh was due on Tuesday but Naidu had junked his plans of announcing the name due to "auspicious" reasons.

So the naming was revealed on Dashami which falls on Thursday.

There was speculation that the government would declare the state capital between Vijayawada and Guntur. However, the was rejected by the Sivaramakrishnan Committee, appointed to look for a new capital.

The five-member panel headed by former Urban Development Secretary K Sivaramakrishnan had ruled in favour of Donakonda in Prakasam district, about 175 km south of Vijayawada.

But Naidu was said to be not keen on it, saying a capital cannot be created in the middle of nowhere with no airport or other facilities.
