PVP Group owns Hyderabad Hotshots in IBL

New Delhi: two postponements, the Indian Badminton League (IBL) on Wednesday finally took a step forward as they announced its first franchise - the PVP Group (Chairman - Prasad V Potluri) that successfully bid for the Hyderabad Hotshots.

A Hyderabad-based multi business house that has interest in realty, media and entertainment and particularly Bollywood, PVP Group makes its debut in sports league and comes with no previous connect with the sport.

Speaking on its association with Badminton and IBL, Chairman of PVP Group, Prasad V Potluri, said: "We are extremely delighted with our association with the Indian Badminton League.

"PVP Group aims to utilize this platform and will ensure that Badminton in India grows and continues to produce world champions. Badminton has brought huge laurels for India in the past and is again capturing the imagination of the masses through the achievements of stars like Saina Nehwal, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa and others.

"PVP is confident that the IBL will serve as a great platform to promote and reward both established players and upcoming ones," he added.

Speaking on their decision to buy Hyderabad Hotshots, Potluri said: "Sports is an integral part of the Consumption story in India. It`s a logical expansion of our Media & Entertainment business to pitch for a badminton team and enter the sports entertainment business."

The IBL was proposed during the Senior National Championship in December last year but the ambitious project was postponed twice from February to June, and then from June to August 14-31.

Sporty Solutions, who are the `Commercial Partner` for IBL, also could not announce the names of the six franchise owners and the date for the players` auction.

Ashish Chadha, CEO, Sporty Solutionz, said, "We are proud to be associated with PVP Group and them coming on board as the owners of Hyderabad Hotshots."

The USD 1-million Indian Badminton League, which will feature six franchises and will run for 18 days, is set to be launched on August 14 with some high-voltage action expected between PVP Ventures` Hyderabad Hotshots and Karnataka Kings.

Each franchise will host a two-day leg and the League will showcase a grand total of 90 matches. The top four franchises will clash in the semifinals and the winners will meet in the grand final on August 31 in Mumbai.

Potluri Supreetha grabs silver at Asian chess championship

Much to the delight of the Vijaywada chess fraternity, 11-year-old Potluri Supreetha won the silver medal at the Asian Youth Under-13 Rapid Chess championship on Thursday night.

It was a moment to cherish for the city’s chess fraternity as young Potluri Supreetha won her second Asian title at Mashhad (Iran) on Thursday night. She pocketed a silver medal in Asian Youth under-13 rapid chess championship by hauling 5.5 points.

Supreetha (Elo rating 1646) drew her last game with her fellow-Vijayawada player World under-10 champion Nuttaki Priyanka to achieve the podium finish. The only game she lost was against the ultimate champion from China - Yang Yijing.

Earlier, the 11-year-old student of Viswa Bharathi English Medium School won her maiden Asian title when she clinched the gold medal in the Asian School Games in 2012. “Her next destination will be Dubai where she will represent India in the World under-13 championship in December,” said her coach V. R. Bobba.

A trainee of Mustabada Sports and Educational Society, Supreetha is labelled as a player who takes no risks. “She is a consistent player and plays solid chess. As she grows she will learn the intricacies of the game better,” felt Global Chess Academy chief coach Khasim.

Chess is not in the family background of Supreetha and her father takes care of agriculture in Nuzvid. What started off as a hobby went on to become an obsession for the young girl. Her mother gave up her job to concentrate on Supreetha’s fledgling career.

She spends around five hours honing her skills everyday. “Her middle and endgames are encouraging. She needs to master the technique of finishing the game within the allotted time,” felt her coach.

Saketh Myneni wins 4th title of the season

Saketh Myneni outclassed Masato Shiga of Japan 6-0, 6-1, in the final of the $10,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament in Tumon, Guam, 2 weeks back.

It was the fourth singles title of the season for Saketh, and ninth career singles title.

In fact, he has not lost a singles match apart from the one he lost to compatriot Karunuday Singh in Bangkok, in the last five tournaments at home and away.

Quite pleased to collect 18 ATP points with his second tournament victory abroad after the one in Thailand last week, the top-seeded Saketh emphasised his approach of facing better competition in different conditions was helping him grow into a better player.

Saketh kept such a strong hold over the match that he did not let his opponent win a game, till he led 3-0 in the second set when the Japanese held serve for a token game to show for his efforts.

Interestingly, Saketh beat five Japanese players in the tournament, and did not drop a set to any of them.
Except for allowing one set to be stretched to the tie-break, he did not concede more than four games in a set to any of them
.
“It is never easy to beat five Japanese players away from home, because they are so physical on court.

“They play solid and make you earn every point. The hot and humid conditions were favouring them a lot. It was raining in patches and that made it worse,” pointed out the World 279th ranked Saketh, the second best ranked Indian singles player on the ATP computer after Somdev Devvarman.

Minister of textiles Kavuri Sambasiva Rao

Businessman-turned-politician Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, who had almost resigned his Lok Sabha seat last October upset over being ignored in the previous Cabinet reshuffle, makes an entry into the Union Council of Ministers after almost three decades of Parliamentary run.
69-year-old Rao, a strong advocate of united Andhra, is opposed to separate Telangana over which the state has been seeing a lot of tensions.
In October last, the five-time MP was almost sure that the Congress leadership will induct him in the Cabinet when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh went for a reshuffle of his council of ministers. Rao now represents Eluru seat.
But the leadership's decision to exclude him from the ministry upset Rao who then made his displeasure public and announced his decision to quit from Lok Sabha. However, the leadership managed to calm him down.
A loyal Congressman, Rao is presently a member of the crucial Congress Coordination Committee in Andhra Pradesh, set up in 2010 to ensure better coordination between the party and the state government headed by N Kiran Kumar Reddy.
A maverick, he sided with veteran Congress leaders N D Tiwari and Arjun Singh who floated Congress (Tiwari) in 1995 following differences with the then Prime Minister and AICC president PV Narasimha Rao.
Born on October 2, 1943 in Dosapadu in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, Rao got his engineering degree from Regional Engineering College in Warangal.
Rao, who has business interests in real estate and construction, was first elected as an MP in 1984 and was re-elected in 1989, 1998, 2004 and 2009. He had represented Machilipatnam seat earlier.
The website of his company Progressive Constructions describes Rao as an "accomplished and successful business person" who "sought a higher calling beyond the confines of a commercial office".
"He aspires to continue in public office and take up higher responsibilities to serve the nation for years to come....While Progressive has lost the active involvement of a dynamic entrepreneur like Rao, we derive immense satisfaction from his nation building activities," it says.
His profile in the Lok Sabha website says that he "set up institutes on science and technology, research and management etc and engaged in construction of major irrigation and power projects and multi-storied urban housing complexes etc".
Rao, who describes himself as an agriculturist, engineer, industrialist and political and social worker, was joint secretary of AICC in 1985 and general secretary of Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee in 1989-94 period and vice president in 1998.
He has served on a number of parliamentary committees in his long innings as a Lok Sabha member.
Rao, who has keen interest in reading and social service, served in a number of social, educational, cultural organisations and employee associations.
He was a member of the Board of School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, Court of Hyderabad University, Court of Jawaharlal Nehru University among several others.
Rao travelled to about 40 countries as a member of parliament. He has a son and three daughters.
