Elections set to redraw battle lines in coastal belt

‘Yuvagarjana’s Grand Success Is An Indication That The All-Powerful Kamma Lobby Is Set To Sail With TDP
News published inTimes of India
Hyderabad/Guntur: It appears that the massive success of TDP’s Yuvagarjana is all set to redraw the battle lines — mainly on caste basis — in the coastal region ahead of the 2009 elections. “Though there were people from other communities also at the meeting, it was mainly the convergence of Kammas which clinched the issue in favour of the TDP and made the meeting a largely successful affair,” admitted a BC leader of the party. He said the traffic on the national highway held up for over 12 hours was in itself a resounding indication of the Yuvagarjana success. But what made the Yuvagarjana special this time round when compared to NTR’s ‘Simhagarjana’ of 1994? Sources told TOI that the Kamma brigade, especially the youth, played a crucial role in mobilising the crowds to the Yuvagarjana meeting. “Without their enthusiasm, the ground opposite the ANU campus couldn’t have turned into a yellow ocean,” an insider close to district party chief Pulla Rao said.

Source said not only the party leadership had rushed senior leaders to the district much in advance to monitor the arrangements, but the preparatory meetings in the Kamma-dominant villages have come in handy for the mobilisation of the crowds, which according to some estimates had even swelled beyond 10 lakhs. Sociologically, Kapus have been the arch rivals of Kammas in the region where even the politically strong Reddys sail with the Kammas. But, the advent of Chiranjeevi on the political stage has changed the equations in the coastal villages as the youth from the politically alienated communities have started challenging the traditional satraps, resulting in serious conflict of interests at the grassroots level, an analyst said.

“The next elections are going to throw new challenges to the administration as all the three powerful sections are more than eager to snatch power,” commented a senior police official. In spite of clear division between the Kammas and Reddys at the village level, the leaders worked together resulting in ‘peaceful’ elections in the region in 2004 as except for a few violent incidents in Palnadu region, there were no major law and order problems.

However, it won’t be the same this time round as the electorate are being polarised on caste lines. “Yuvagarjana will surely help the TDP to bounce back, particularly in the coastal region, where it had tasted humiliating defeats in the last couple of years,” observed R Subramanyam, a retired principal. TDP senior leader Yanamala Ramakrishnudu hit the nail when he said the ‘countdown’ for the doom of the Congress government both at the Centre and in the state has begun with the Yuvagarjana success. “The crowd turnout has only strengthened our belief that it’s only a matter of time before the corrupt YSR government is swept out of power,” he added.

‘We are one family’: Defending their stance on supporting Chandrababu Naidu, TDP politburo member and NTR’s son Harikrishna said they do not want to dig into the past. Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Harikrishna alleged that Congress leaders were behind their sister Purandareswari’s open letter to them.

“We have very high regard for her. We always wish her success wherever she is. To be frank, we are one as a family. We are divided only on political lines as she is Daggubati Purandareswari in political life,” said Harikrishna.

'Sikhandi' Purandareswari!

Yuva Garjana 'Super Hit'

NTR PRANGANAM (GUNTUR): It was a sea of people at the Yuva Garjana venue with the event receiving an overwhelming response to the call given by the party to youth to come to the meeting to provide it an impetus to get back to power in the 2009 Assembly elections.

On Wednesday every possible road leading to Acharya Nagarjuna University on the National Highway No.5 was packed with people and vehicles.

People lustily cheered every dialogue of Telugu Desam Party leaders with the mention of Junior NTR by Nandamuri Harikrishna receiving the maximum claps.

Festive mood
A festive mood prevailed at the venue from last night and families in large numbers made a beeline to the venue till 11 a.m. on Wednesday. More than 20 trains stopped at Nagarjuna Nagar railway station that was non-functional for the regular train traffic.

While the organisers did not want the trains to stop here, the Railway authoriries found it convenient and time saving to stop them at the station 500 metres from the venue.

Streamlining
The organisers and police feared security problems, but a large contingent was posted on the road leading to ANU main gate from the railway station to streamline the movement of people before reaching the venue.

Every possible place around the venue was occupied with people from all over the State and neighbouring States. Bible Mission building adjoining the venue, tall trees, lorries, high-rise scaffoldings built for cut-outs were fully occupied by Balakrishna fans and Telugu Desam Party sympathisers.

Such was the surge of vehicles from Vijayawada and Guntur side that traffic got jammed up to 30 km from the venue on both sides of the National Highway.

The narrow Roads & Buildings roads leading to Amaravathi, Tadikonda, Nandivelugu and Nambur and Tenali were also full of vehicles and people walked more than two km to reach the venue.

Crackers
An hour-long bursting of crackers was received well by the public and to the organisers’ surprise not many left the venue even while the last speaker in the form of Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu was making announcements. His promise of providing loans at 10 paise interest and Rs. 50,000 crore package for youth got the highest cheers.

TRIMEX to invest Rs 2,250 cr in ilmenite mining

TRIMEX Industries (Prasad Koneru Managing Director) announced that it will commence ilmenite mining operations in the next two months in the Srikurmam district of Andhra Pradesh, where it plans to invest Rs 2,250 crore.

The area has proven reserves of 5.5 million tons of ilmenite and about 50 per cent of the land area specified in the mining lease was owned by the government. TRIMEX would be executing mining operations and related projects through its wholly owned subsidiary, TRIMEX Sands.
The current capital expenditure stands at Rs 250 crore and was expected to climb to Rs 2,250 crore in five years.

TRIMEX would hold the mining lease for a period of 30 years from the date of the lease award and was renewable for another 30 years.

Ilmenite is used to produce titanium dioxide, a key ingredient in creating white pigments in high quality paints, paper and plastics. Ilmenite is also used as an intermediate feedstock in the manufacture of titanium metals.

Pradeep Koneru, executive director, TRIMEX said: “Through this secure supply of ilmenite, TRIMEX will be one of the lowest cost titanium dioxide manufacturers globally, by value adding and integrating our operations throughout the supply chain. To this end, we are working to ensure that prices remain competitive to benefit the end-user.”

The value addition study is being conducted by TZMI, an independent consulting firm, specialising in the mineral sands and titanium dioxide pigment industries.

The company’s site facility has a capacity to produce 200,000 tons of ilmenite per annum and is expected to produce 65 per cent of that capacity in the first year of operations. Also, the facility would have an annual capacity to produce 80,000 tons of garnet, 80,000 tons of sillimenite, 6,000 tons of rutile and 6,000 tons of zircon.

TRIMEX Industries signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Andhra Pradesh in January 2001 to develop beach sand minerals. Under the MoU, TRIMEX has two more prospecting licenses for 40 sq km in areas adjacent to Srikurmam. The prospecting licenses will enhance the current economies of scale.

The global consumption of titanium dioxide pigment is projected to increase at a CAGR of three per cent from 4.96 million tons in 2008 to 6.25 million tons in 2015.
