Count down starts for YSR Government!

Seaways to expand into offshore oil and gas biz

Hyderabad, Feb. 20 Hyderabad-based Seaways Shipping is firming up plans to exploit the growing opportunities in the offshore oil and gas business.

The Rs 460-crore company is looking at a joint venture with a foreign firm.

Talks are on with potential companies. Seaways plans to provide ancilliary services to the sector, said Capt Parvathaneni.V.K. Mohan, (Son of P.Upendra Ex.MP) Chairman and Managing Director.

India has exploited just about 18 per cent of its offshore potential and has huge business potential.

Looking ahead

Seaways is strengthening its cargo feeder services on both the East and West coast. By the end of the calender year 2008, it intends to have a total of 8 ships, each ranging in capacity from the smallest — 228 TEU (Twenty feet equivalent units) to the bigger 800-900 TEU capacity ones.

Plans are to increase the number of ships on the West Coast (two this year), to strengthen the domestic cargo base and provide better connectivity for mainline operations, Capt Mohan told.

With the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) as the hub, the mainline sees nearly 70 per cent of the domestic cargo through the West coast. The other two major ports — Mundra and Vallarpadam — need to be better connected in the near future.

The company has plans to expand operations to the Middle East and South East Asian countries with its own containers. Similarly, it would have own offices in Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai and Malaysia soon.

Capt Mohan said the company is expected to close the current financial year at Rs 750 crore. As part of the future plans it is planning to go for an IPO (initial public offering) in the third quarter of 2009.

God's rule!

Lanco plans wind turbine facility in Mangalore

It’s the second company entering manufacture of wind turbines; commercial launch slated for Sep next year

Infrastructure company Lanco Infratech Ltd is planning to set up one of the country’s largest wind turbines manufacturing facilities, to take advantage of shortage of wind turbines in the global and domestic markets, according to chairman Lagadapati Madhusudhan Rao.
Lanco proposes to set up wind turbines facility close to Mangalore in Karnataka.

“We have tied up with a German engineering company for wind turbine technology. Currently prototyping of 2MW wind turbine is going on,” said Rao, who declined to name the German firm.
Lanco plans to set up a wind turbine manufacturing facility with an installed capacity of 500 units of 2MW turbine each a year at an investment of close to Rs500 crore, said Rao.
Work on the wind turbine manufacturing facility has been initiated and Lanco expects commercial launch of turbines sometime by September next year, added Rao.

This makes Lanco the second Indian company to set up wind turbine manufacturing facility after Suzlon Energy Ltd and sixth player in the Indian wind turbine market after Suzlon, Danish manufacturer Vestas Wind SystemsA/S, US company GE Energy, German manufacturer Enercon GmbH and Spain’s Gamesa SA.

Lanco’s parent Lanco Group has interests in power, construction and real estate, and annual revenues of Rs1,647 in 2006-07.

Suzlon, which is the fifth largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world with 2,700MW capacity, has captured close to 8% of global wind turbine sales and currently holds around 50% of market share in India.

According to Rao, the domestic wind energy market currently suffers from shortage of wind turbine supplies. In the five-year period to 2012, the Indian government is targeting additional wind power capacity of 10,500MW. While the government is estimating a wind energy potential of around 45,000MW, the non-governmental sources put it at 65,000MW to 100,000MW.

Rao said India, with around 8,000MW of installed capacity in wind energy, now stands fourth in the world after Germany, the US and Spain. “While our country is adding around 1,800MW of wind energy this year, there are not enough supplies.”

Stating that the supply situation in the global markets was also similar, he said the company would actively look at the exports market. The Global Wind Energy Council has estimated the global market for wind generation equipment at $36billion per year.

Suzlon, which sold 545MW of turbines during third quarter ended December 2007, has in the past indicated that it would focus on Europe and China.

It had orders worth $4.3 billion (3,358MW) as on January 25, majority from overseas buyers at $3.7 billion (2,916MW) and $600 million (441MW) from the domestic market.
“One of the important factors of the wind power business is the transportation of oversized cargo for blades and towers and our facility would be ideally located,” he said.

India’s installed capacity of wind power stood at 7,660 MW as of September 2007, mainly spread across Tamil Nadu (3457.5MW), in Maharashtra (1484.9MW) and Karnataka (849.4MW). In Rajasthan it was 469.9MW), Gujarat (667.1MW), Andhra Pradesh (121.8MW), Madhya Pradesh (57.8MW), Kerala (2MW), West Bengal (1.6MW) and other Indian states (1.6MW).

Shankar K., vice-president, research, with the Mumbai-based equity research firm Edelweiss Securities Ltd, said there is a growing trend of companies setting up wind energy units as wind power is eligible for subsidies, tax sops and carbon credits.

After incorporating these benefits, the tariffs and profits are quite attractive, which is the reason why many companies are setting up wind capacity, he said. “Lanco, which has two small wind-power plants in operation and has been seeking to expand this business, also wants to cash in on this opportunity and since getting equipment could be difficult, they are contemplating an assembly unit to expedite setting up of their wind mills,” said Shankar.

Synopsis

Can you get a life and discover love, all in one day? Two women are about to find out.
In the sophisticated and heartfelt comedy Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Academy Award winner Frances McDormand plays the film's title role opposite Academy Award nominee Amy Adams (star of the blockbuster Enchanted).

The cast also includes Golden Globe Award nominee Lee Pace (of the hit series Pushing Daisies), Ciarán Hinds (There Will Be Blood), Shirley Henderson (the Harry Potter films), Mark Strong (Stardust), and screen newcomer Tom Payne.

In 1939 London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (played by Ms. McDormand) is a middle-aged governess who finds herself once again unfairly dismissed from her job. Without so much as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realizes that she must - for the first time in two decades - seize the day. This she does, by intercepting an employment assignment outside of her comfort level - as "social secretary." Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Ms. Adams).

Within minutes, Miss Pettigrew finds herself swept into a heady high-society milieu - and, within hours, living it up. Taking the "social secretary" designation to heart, she tries to help her new friend Delysia navigate a love life and career, both of which are complicated by the three men in Delysia's orbit; devoted pianist Michael (Mr. Pace), intimidating nightclub owner Nick (Mr. Strong), and impressionable junior impresario Phil (Mr. Payne). Miss Pettigrew herself is blushingly drawn to the gallant Joe (Mr. Hinds), a successful designer who is tenuously engaged to haughty fashion maven Edythe (Ms. Henderson) - the one person who senses that the new "social secretary" may be out of her element, and schemes to undermine her.

Over the next 24 hours, Guinevere and Delysia will empower each other to discover their romantic destinies.

Madhucon – de-risking through subsidiary

Madhucon Projects’ (Nama Nageswara Rao, Chairman & MD) plan to transfer its build, operate, transfer (BOT) projects in the road segment and its venture in coal mines and power to a wholly owned subsidiary may signal its intention to mitigate risks for the parent company and keep its balance sheet intact while pursuing bigger projects.
The company’s board late Monday approved a proposal to transfer 4 BOT projects valued at about Rs 250 crore totally to a wholly owned subsidiary Madhucon Infra, at an arms-length transaction. The company also plans to route investments in power and coal mines through this subsidiary. The subsidiary would be a holding company for all the above projects. The proposal is subject to approval by shareholders.

Higher investments
All the four BOT projects of Madhucon have achieved financial closure. However, given the long drawn nature of BOT contracts, further capital requirements for the same would be high. Additionally, bidding for new bigger BOT projects would also require substantial networth and funding.

By setting up a subsidiary for the BOT projects, Madhucon may essentially be creating an independent vehicle to fund these projects and mitigate risks of higher debt or equity expansion in its balance sheet. The company as an EPC player may continue to execute projects owned/bagged by the subsidiary thus securing its revenues.

Business potential
Madhucon recently acquired coal-mining licence in Malaysia. It also plans to set up a 540 MW power plant in Andhra Pradesh. These segments again necessitate huge investments that may be better handled through a separate vehicle.

All the businesses transferred to the subsidiary - BOT projects, power and coal mining hold significant business potential and if successful could provide upside to the stock of Madhucon Projects over the long term without the company having to undergo any earnings dilution in the short run.

Naren to be the first Indian driver at WRC

Indiaray into motorsport. It all began with Vijay Mallya’s introduction of Force India F1 onto the Formula 1 scene. Force India F1 has no Indian drivers lined up for the current season but the team at least has India in its name. Spice Group’s take over of the Super Aguri F1 team, could possibly see an Indian driver in form of Narain Karthikeyan, but an oil and gas company from Chennai called Sidvin, has gone one step ahead, as they introduced the first Indian team for the 2008 FIA Production World Rally Championships but more importantly — with an Indian driver.

Naren Kumar (left) and Tommi Makinen in Mumbai

Six time national rally champion Naren Kumar (A Kamma guy from Coimbatore) is all set to be the first Indian to race in the world motor rally scene when he debuts for Team Sidvin India in June at Acropolis in Greece. The Coimbatore-based Kumar, will be receive technical and vehicle support from four-time world rally champion Tommi Makinen’s Racity Oy Limited.

We will support Naren in all possible ways, and I am sure we are heading for some exciting times. It’s good to be involved with India. I hope in future more young drivers come up for the rally,” said Makinen.

Motorsports Association of India’s president Nazir Hoosein hailed Kumar’s achievement as a red-letter day for Indian motorsports but he said that it’s going to be tough for Kumar. Hossein also mentioned that Rally racing in different than circuit racing.

Tough Task ahead

“It’s going to be a tough task for Naren who has to work extremely hard and there is no place for errors in Rally racing, which is tougher than circuit racing. A rally race driver can drive in circuit race but it’s way too difficult the other way around,” said Hoosein.

Kumar believes the four month period is good enough to prepare for him to prepare and with a good support team, he believes he can definitely do a good job.

A big leap

“It’s a big leap from what we have done before. I am backed by a fantastic a sponsor and Makinen and his team who have probably built the best rally car,” said Kumar, who has won 36 rallies in his career including an Asian zonal championship. Kumar would be driving a Subaru Group N Rally championship car for the first time. On the possibility of World Rally Championship in India, Hoosein added, “Rallying requitres a good infrastructure, we can definitely do it with a good support. FI is keen about it, but don’t know how India is prepared.”

If things go in favour of India, then this year there is a possibility of seeing both the Coimbatore based drivers (Kumar and Karthikeyan, both are Kammas) racing at the world level in Indian cars.

The Kammas company blossoms as world’s biggest grower of roses

SR Karuturi, MD, Karuturi Network

“After acquiring Kenyan company Sher Agencies, we now have 5.5% of the rose business globally” - Sai Ramakrishna Karuturi, MD, Karuturi Networks

There is a school of thought that says that if you are going to get something done properly, then you have to do it yourself. It is a principle at the heart of many a great business and it is one that Ramakrishna Karuturi knows well.

He has risen to the top of the rose tree, becoming the world’s largest cultivator of the flowers, after Karuturi Networks, acquired the 188-hectare, Kenya-based Dutch rose farm Sher Agencies for US$73 million in 2007 and says it has plans to produce 1 million stems daily by March 2008.

KNL already has 50 hectares of rose fields in Ethiopia and has been allotted additional 450 hectares of land for its expansion by The Government of Ethiopia. Ethiopia is an ideal location for rose cultivation because of its climatic and soil conditions, cheap labor and better access to EU.

The mechanical engineer from Bangalore University, who returned to India from business school in Ohio in the United States a decade ago to run the family cables (Deepak Cables) and transmissions towers business, began his unlikely move into the flower industry one long, frustrating Valentine’s Day. Hunting for a rose bouquet for his wife across India’s IT hub, he drew a blank. Bangalore was a rose-free zone.

So he decided to start to grow them himself. In 1996, the entrepreneur opened two greenhouses on 3.2 hectares of land in the southern Indian city, which is renowned for its temperate climate, and began to export the flowers. Mr Karuturi’s roses are now sold in Africa, America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. With the Sher acquisition, the fourth outside India and a deal financed through foreign currency convertible bonds, Karuturi’s annual production has jumped from 130 million stems to 650 million. Its target is one billion stems by 2010. To achieve that, the company will build more greenhouses in Ethiopia and will seek further acquisitions in the highly fragmented global flower business. It is in advanced takeover talks with a nursery in Ecuador.

Mr Karuturi, 42, believes that there is a large market in India, where Valentine’s Day is being celebrated increasingly. “There is huge potential in India. When I came back from the US, Valentine’s Day was unheard of as a festival, but now even on Mother’s Day, gifts are exchanged. I was surprised how quickly Western events have been assimilated into the culture,” Mr Karuturi said. About 20 per cent of Karuturi’s rose business is domestic, but he says that can be increased to 50 per cent. The company has 100 flower shops in India.

“We produce enough rose to fill up one 737 and one 727 plane everyday,” says Sai Ramakrishna Karuturi, Managing Director of Karuturi Networks. “We account for 5.5% of the total rose business globally.”

Karuturi also supplies bottled gherkins to European, American and Russian supermarkets and provides niche software and IT services.

The quietude in the farm at Naranahalli village, about 60 kilometers outside Bangalore city, belies the activities of the little-known Bangalore-based Karuturi Networks, the world's largest rose-producer, with offices in Bangalore, Dubai, Amsterdam, Nairobi and Addis Ababa. Worldwide, though, cut-roses from countries such as Ethiopia and Kenya, form the largest global suppliers.

An estimated 40,000 hectares of land are under rose cultivation world-wide, yet the biggest farm is no more than 200 hectares. Kenya has the world’s largest share of the rose trade - 4 per cent – because it has ideal growing conditions, including 12 hours of light a day. Horticulture is Kenya’s third-biggest foreign exchange earner, bringing about $100 million (£49 million) into the economy every year, with most flowers exported to Europe.

Valentine's Day (February 14) offer great potential to Karuturi Networlks because of climatic advantage during the period. Sale prices, usually around 20 US cents per stem off-season, sell for $3-4 per stem during the rose-happy holiday.

PTC in barter deal with Simhapuri and Meenakshi Energy

The deal, the first of its kind in India, will also see PTC paying the two companies a fee to generate electricity

Power trading firm PTC India Ltd will supply coal to the plants of Hyderabad-based generation firms Simhapuri Energy Pvt. Ltd and Meenakshi Energy Pvt. Ltd in return for an equivalent value of electricity in an effort to tie up long-term sources of power.

The deal, the first of its kind in India, will also see PTC paying the two companies a fee to generate electricity.

“We will be supplying around 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of coal to them for generating electricity for us. We will be paying them a fee for doing so. We have adopted this strategy as it will provide us with an assured electricity supply for our power-trading business,” said a senior PTC executive, who did not wish to be identified.

The two companies will generate 270MW of power each for PTC. Both Simhapuri and Meenakshi are merchant power plants, which means the companies are free to sell the power to customers of their choice. Simhapuri has a generation capacity of 540MW and Meenakshi 400MW, and both projects are coming up near the Krishnapattnam port in Andhra Pradesh.

Yarlagadda Harish Chandra Prasad, chairman, Malaxmi Infra Ventures (India) Pvt. Ltd, the company behind Simhapuri Energy, could not be reached for comment. A spokesperson for Meenakshi Energy did not respond to queries.

PTC will supply coal to these projects from the coal blocks that it plans to acquire in Indonesia.

The company plans to create a $1 billion (Rs3,960 crore) fund for the acquisition of overseas blocks. Prices of imported coal, including freight, are around $90 (Rs3,546) per tonne. The company has set a target of bringing 15mtpa of coal to India for a minimum period of 30 years, enabling it to supply fuel to projects with an aggregate generating capacity of 5,000MW—and, as the two deals with Simhapuri and Meenakshi show, get power in return.

KCP diversifying into hospitality sector

Chennai, Feb. 6 KCP Ltd has announced a Rs 390-crore expansion programme that would see it diversify into the hospitality industry and expand its existing lines of business — cement and foundry.

Mr Velagapudi Lakshmana Dutt, Chairman, KCP Ltd, said that the company is looking at exploiting real estate and the resources available with the company through these projects. The company will fund over 30-40 per cent of the expansion programme through internal accruals and the balance with borrowings.

It will invest Rs 40 crore to set up a 80-room hotel in Hyderabad at Somajigudda, an important commercial centre. It will be a ‘3-star plus’ facility, which the company hopes to start operating by October 2009. KCP will complete the construction work on the project before finalising a management contract with hotel chains, Mr Dutt said.

The company is setting up an 80-lakh tonne-a-year cement plant at Mukthyala in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, at a cost of Rs 280 crore. This plant is expected to start production in March 2010. The company now operates a 6-lakh tonne-a-year plant at Guntur District, where it has completed a modernisation programme.

Finalising suppliers

The company is finalising the suppliers for the project and it is an advantage that KCP makes its own key equipment such as the mill, kiln and preheaters at its foundry, which it is expanding, he said.

At its foundry in Tiruvottriyur in North Chennai, KCP is investing Rs 70 crore to expand its capacity to handle larger casting and meet the demands of a growing market. It manufacturers equipment for sugar, cement, steel and power industries.

The foundry now has a capacity handle about 40 tonnes of liquid metal, which means castings of about 25-30 tonnes. This would be expanded to 90 tonnes liquid metal handling for castings of about 45-50 tonnes.

Kampani emerges with Eenadu deal

Valued at Rs1,200 cr, the investment allows Ushodaya to walk away from a stalled deal with Blackstone Group

Mumbai / Hyderabad / New Delhi: Famed deal maker Nimesh N. Kampani has swooped in with a personal investment, potentially valued at around Rs1,200 crore, allowing Ushodaya Enterprises Ltd, publisher of Eenadu, the largest selling Telugu newspaper, to walk away from a stalled year-long effort to sell a 26% stake to Blackstone Group for $275 million, or about Rs1,080 crore.

The complicatedly structured transaction, which was confirmed by two people familiar with the matter, includes debt and equity, and comes ahead of a crucial Supreme Court hearing, tentatively scheduled for 8 February, for Ushodaya’s principal promoter, embattled entrepreneur Ramoji Rao, who is battling the Andhra Pradesh government in court over issues related to repaying disputed public deposits accepted by Margadarsi Financiers, a company owned by Rao and his family. Without the new cash infusion, Rao would have been on the defensive in his efforts to try and block an attempt by the state government to attach assets of his companies.

Kampani declined to comment, saying it was a private deal between two private firms. Ushodaya declined to comment.

Rao and his family own 99.86% of Ushodaya and had, until recently, hoped to use proceeds from the Blackstone deal, which would have been the largest private equity deal in Indian print media, along with other funds, to pay back the depositors.

But Blackstone’s proposal became mired in the old political and emerging business rivalry between Rao and Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Congress chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Leading the campaign against the deal was Aruna Kumar Vundavalli, a Congress member of Parliament from the state’s Rajahmundry constituency, who wrote letters to multiple ministries, especially the finance ministry, asking it to reject the deal on various grounds.

Amid such political and other pressures, the deal was not cleared by finance minister P. Chidambaram despite having necessary approvals from all other government ministries and departments that need to sign off on such deals, including two all-clear recommendations from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board.

Trying to salvage any deal, Blackstone scaled back the proposal. That revised proposal was then cleared by the board in January, but has since been held up by the finance minister.

The Kampani investment is being made through Equator Trading Enterprises Pvt. Ltd, a so-called special purpose vehicle that is privately owned by Kampani, chairman of JM Financial Ltd, a publicly traded integrated financial services group.

Equator was incorporated on 7 January with an authorized capital of Rs.27 crore and a paid-up capital of Rs100,000. Kampani has since infused Rs200 crore capital into the new firm early this week.

People familiar with the matter said Equator was specifically created for the Ushodaya investment and it is likely that Kampani might not hold on to the investment. It is unclear how much stake Equator has picked up in Ushodaya.

“It is a very complex deal that has both put and call options, allowing both Kampani and Ushodaya promoters to get out,” said one person. “It is part equity and part debt and Kampani has the right to sell off the equity to a third party. He is an investment banker and will look for opportunities (to profit). It all depends on how profitable the group is.”

Kampani is not believed to be investing on behalf on others, at least at this stage. Kampani and his family hold a 26.92% stake in JM Financial. Last year, he severed a decade-old tie-up with Morgan Stanley, selling JM Financial’s 49% stake in an institutional brokerage business for $445 million.

The Blackstone-Ushodaya deal had a 31 January deadline but the US private equity firm had privately hoped it could yet convince Rao to consummate a transaction if the government approved its lowered deal.

WASHINGTON: It's called the “Junior Nobel”, and eight Indian American high school students - five of them girls - are among 40 named finalists for this year's Intel Science Talent Search, America's most prestigious high school science competition now in its 67th year.

Selected from among several thousand applicants from across the US, the finalists will travel to Washington DC in March for a gruelling week-long finale. The winner will get a USD 100,000 scholarship, while each of the 40 finalists gets USD 5,000.

The Indian American finalists are: Shravani Mikkilineni (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan), Hamsa Sridhar (Kings Park, New York), Ashok Chandran (Nesconset, New York), Shivani Sud (Durham, North Carolina), Isha Jain (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania), Ayon Sen (Austin, Texas) and Vinay Venkatesh Ramasesh (Fort Worth, Texas), Avanthi Raghavan (Orlando, Florida),

“Intel STS showcases the incredible advancements made by students across the nation when we get the system right and demonstrates the capabilities of the next generation,” Intel CEO Craig Barrett said.

Over the past 67 years, the Science Talent Search alumni have received more than 100 of the world's most coveted science and math honours including six Nobel Prizes, three National Medals of Science and 10 MacArthur Foundation Fellowships, says Intel.

Shravani Mikkilineni 17, studied the computation of continued fraction expansions of the square roots of positive integers for her Intel Science Talent Search project in mathematics. Continued fractions provide approximations to the square roots of non-square integers, but are not easily computed. Let d be the largest integer less than the square root of k. Shravani found an accessible computation in the case where 2d / (k - d 2) is a half integer.

At Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, Shravani is captain of the varsity tennis team and senior editor of the yearbook. Originally the only female on the team, she has emerged as a leader on her school's F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Team. Shravani played violin in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Sinfonia, and enjoys performing classical Indian dance. Her work in both biology and math has earned numerous national awards, and she co-founded a nonprofit charitable organization which benefits children orphaned by HIV/AIDS in Ghana, raising both money and school supplies. The daughter of Prasad and Jhansi Mikkilineni, she hopes to continue her math and biology research at Harvard, MIT or Stanford.

In 2007, Sohan Venkat Mikkilineni, brother of Shravani Mikkilineni (Detroit Country Day school) was also the finalist along with 3 other Indians in the Intel Science Talent Search.
